Southern California, USA -- Cambodian New Year is finally underway in Southern California! The celebrations this year are expected to be bigger, better, and more entertaining than ever! Who wouldnt mind devouring a plate of beef sticks, papaya salad, and eggrolls? Absorb yourself with fun and games throughout the day as hundreds of students from around the country come to kick off the New Year at CSC's Khmer New Year Games and Picnic! Not enough? Party all night long at Unification Two with all your buddies while enjoying your favorite Cambodian dishes, music, and dance! Given that, who can resist!? CSC's Khmer New Year Games and Picnic is coming up fast on April 15th with a ton of free food, and Unification Two is just around the corner to finish off the New Year Celebrations with a knockout punch on April 21st! Come along and rejoice with all your friends! Celebrate the 2001 Cambodian New Year like you've never done before... in style!
Next Sunday, April 15th, California State University of Fullerton will be hosting the Cambodian Student Council's Khmer New Year Games and Picnic. The event will feature free food for all participants who come to celebrate the New Year. For the past five months, the Cambodian Student Council has worked long and hard to prepare this momentous event.
Sarin Ong of CSUF, the coordinator for the event, hopes the picnic will expose the new Khmer generation that grew up in an American society to the culture of their ancestors as well as [make] the small communities that we live in and the community as a large aware of the beauty of Khmer culture. Regardless of age, ethnicity, social, and economic class, the picnic will allow students of all ages to enjoy the food and games that our parents and ancestors enjoy.
When asked what she thinks about the Khmer New Year Games and Picnic, Pichanary Rotratsirikun of USC says that it's "a time to celebrate, meet others from different schools, and just to have fun." And this is true to the purpose of the Cambodian Student Council, whose goals are to promote cultural awareness, outreach, and advocacy in the Cambodian community.
From 10am to 3pm, the Khmer New Year Games and Picnic will hold a number of games and competitions. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the medley of games which includes tug-o-war, sack races, tidal wave, limbo, bohk-la'hong eating contest, volleyball, karaoke competitions, steal-the-bacon, Who wants to be a 20-dollarnaire? and much more! Not up for games? There will be free beef sticks, bohk-la'hong, and eggrolls to satiate that deep down hunger!
The fun isnt over yet! Expected to appear live on stage will be Prach with his entourage of Mujestic Records affiliates, and a number of other performers. Prach's new album, Northstar Resurrect, will be on sale to anyone interested in purchasing them. Last, but definitely not least, there will be a full-scale powder fight at the end of the picnic, so dress for fun! Who wouldnt want to powder their friends or see themselves covered in white?! Its all fun and free to everyone who comes!
And there is more! On Saturday, April 21st the Cambodian Student Council and SPOTS will be hosting Unification Two, the mother of all parties for Cambodian students. You've got to be 18 or over, but life is good when you're 18, right? The action starts at 9pm. Dress to impress, or stand outside. Tickets are $8 presale from the CSC representative schools, which includes UCI, CSUF, UCLA, SDSU, UCSD, USC, and CSULB, or $12 or $15 at the door. The party is going to be held at Naga's Restaurant, affording everyone a beautiful view of Long Beach's downtown lights. Bring a date if you want to get romantic and stroll over to watch the majestic Queen Mary under the sparkling stars. If you're the party-going animalistic dance type, the music will keep playing until 2am.
